The cave's roof, resembling stacked palm-leaf manuscripts, is believed to symbolise the pages of the scriptures penned by the sage.
According to legend, Sage Vyas chose this tranquil location to dictate the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha agreed to transcribe the epic on the condition that Vyas would recite it without pause. When Ganesha's pen broke, he broke off a part of his tusk to continue writing, explaining the deity's unique depiction with a broken tusk. Beyond the Mahabharata, Vyas is credited with composing the 18 Puranas, the Brahma Sutras, and dividing the Vedas into four parts within this very cave.
Vyas Gufa is situated in Mana village, recognised as the last Indian village before the Indo-China border. Located approximately 3 kilometres from the sacred town of Badrinath, the cave is accessible via a short trek from the village. The nearest railhead is Haridwar railway station, about 336 kilometres away, while the closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, approximately 315 kilometres from Badrinath.
The cave is open to visitors daily, with no entry fee, and can be explored in about an hour. The optimal time to visit is between May and June or September and October, when the weather is pleasant and the region is accessible. During winter months, from November to February, the area experiences heavy snowfall, making travel challenging.
