Muchukund Gufa or Muchukunda Cave is a peaceful and sacred cave located in Mana village, the last village of India near the Indo-Tibet border. Mana is about 3 km from Badrinath in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. The cave is closely linked to Indian mythology and attracts spiritual travellers, nature lovers, and pilgrims visiting Badrinath.
Muchukund Gufa is situated on a hilly path in Mana village, near the Saraswati River. Mana village lies at an altitude of about 3,200 metres (10,500 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas. To reach this place, one has to walk a short distance from Mana village through beautiful natural surroundings and ancient mythological spots like Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, and Bheem Pul.
The name of the cave comes from King Muchukund, a famous character from ancient Indian scriptures like the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. As the story goes, King Muchukund was a brave and powerful king who fought long wars on Earth and even in heaven alongside the gods (Devas). After the war, he wanted rest and was granted a long, undisturbed sleep by Lord Indra.
The gods also gave him a special power: anyone who disturbed his sleep would be burnt to ashes by his gaze. King Muchukund came to this cave in the Himalayas to rest.
Later, Lord Krishna, during his fight with the demon Kalayavana, led the demon into the cave. Kalayavana unknowingly disturbed the sleeping King Muchukund. As a result, Muchukund opened his eyes, and Kalayavana was immediately turned into ashes.
Impressed by Lord Krishna’s divine presence, Muchukund decided to spend the rest of his life in devotion and meditation inside this cave.
This story makes the cave a sacred place, symbolising peace, devotion, and divine power.
