Patal Rudreshwar Cave is a mysterious and sacred place located in the beautiful district of Champawat, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The cave is around 14 km from Gangolihat and about 20 km from Lohaghat, nestled in a quiet forested area. It lies deep in the hills, surrounded by thick pine and oak forests, making it a peaceful yet exciting place for nature lovers and spiritual seekers.

It is also said that the Pandavas, the heroes of the Mahabharata, spent time here during their exile (Vanvas).
Inside the cave, natural rock formations and stalactites resemble figures of gods, sages, and animals. Many believe these formations are divine signs. There is a naturally formed Shivling (symbol of Lord Shiva) inside the cave, which is worshipped by devotees. The spiritual history and natural beauty make this cave a sacred and fascinating place to explore.
Tourists begin their journey with a short trek through a forest path. The trail is peaceful and filled with birdsong and greenery. On reaching the cave entrance, visitors must descend about 20–25 steps into the earth. The cave is dark inside, and torches or small lights are used to explore the inner chambers.
The inside of the cave is naturally cool and damp. As you walk further in, you’ll notice many strange and beautiful rock shapes on the walls and ceiling. Many say they see images of Lord Ganesha, Parvati, Nandi, and other gods formed naturally in the stone.

The cave is open to tourists from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Since the cave is deep and dark, it is not advisable to visit after sunset. During the monsoon season, the path to the cave can become slippery, so it’s best to avoid those months.
The best time to visit Patal Rudreshwar is from March to June and from September to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the trail remains safe for trekking.
