Panch Prayag Confluences Uttarakhand

Panch Prayag: 5 sacred river confluences in Uttarakhand -Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Devprayag-where rivers merge into the Ganges River

Panch Prayag refers to the five sacred river confluences in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, revered in Hindu tradition for their spiritual significance. The term "Panch" means five, and "Prayag" means confluence, highlighting the merging of rivers that contribute to the formation of the holy Ganges. These sites, in descending order of their occurrence along the Alaknanda River, are Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag.

Vishnuprayag marks the meeting of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers near Joshimath, named after Lord Vishnu. Nandaprayag, further downstream, is where the Nandakini joins the Alaknanda, linked to King Nanda’s penance. Karnaprayag sees the Pindar River merge with the Alaknanda, associated with the Mahabharata's Karna. Rudraprayag, named after Lord Shiva’s Rudra form, is the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda. Finally, Devprayag, the most significant, is where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda unite to form the Ganges, symbolizing its sacred origin.

These confluences are not only natural wonders but also pilgrimage hubs where devotees bathe to cleanse their souls, seeking moksha (salvation). Surrounded by Himalayan beauty, the Panch Prayag blends spirituality, mythology, and nature, making them a cornerstone of Uttarakhand’s cultural heritage.
