Uttarakhand, also called Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods), is home to several sacred Shaktipeeths dedicated to Goddess Shakti. These holy shrines hold deep spiritual and cultural importance in both the Kumaon and Garhwal divisions, attracting countless devotees and pilgrims.
According to Hindu scriptures, several temples in Uttarakhand's Kumaon and Garhwal regions are revered as Shakti Peethas. These sacred sites mark the places where body parts of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen during Lord Shiva's cosmic dance of sorrow after her self-immolation.
In the Garhwal region, significant Shakti Peethas include the Chandrabadani Temple, where Sati's torso is said to have landed, and the Surkanda Devi Temple, believed to be the spot where her head fell. Another key site is Kalimath, where her lower body is worshipped. Additionally, the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples in Haridwar are also considered Siddha Peethas, places of immense spiritual power.
In the Kumaon region, two prominent sites stand out: the Purnagiri Temple, believed to be where Sati's navel fell, and the Naina Devi Temple in Nainital, where her eyes are said to have landed. These temples are not just centres of worship but are also vital to the cultural and spiritual identity of Uttarakhand, drawing pilgrims and devotees from all over the country.
