Location

Vashishta Gufa is around 25 kilometres from Rishikesh and about 70 kilometres from Haridwar. It is situated on the Rishikesh-Badrinath road, near a village called Gular. You can reach it by taxi, private car, or by hiring a scooter from Rishikesh. From the main road, a short walk through forested paths takes you to the cave and the riverbank.

The surroundings are full of green trees, hills, and the calm flow of the Ganga River. The place is ideal for people looking to escape the noise of the city and spend time in silence and nature.

History

Vashishta Gufa is believed to be the meditation spot of Sage Vashishta, one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) in ancient Indian scriptures. According to legend, after the death of his children, Sage Vashishta was deeply sad and came to the Himalayas to find peace. It is said that he meditated in this cave for a long time and found inner peace here.

Later, Swami Purushottamananda, a great saint of the 20th century, also meditated here and helped develop the area. A small ashram near the cave is named after him – the Swami Purushottamananda Ashram. Today, the cave is maintained by the ashram and is open for visitors and spiritual seekers.

The inside of the cave is dark, cool, and quiet, making it an ideal place for deep meditation. Many visitors sit silently in the cave for long periods to feel calm and connected with their inner selves.

There is also a beautiful sandy beach along the Ganga River near the cave, where visitors often sit, relax, or do yoga. The calm environment, the sound of flowing water, and the cool breeze make the place feel magical and healing.

Timing

Vashishta Gufa is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon when it is not too hot. The cave is usually closed for a few hours in the afternoon for cleaning and maintenance. Entry is free, but donations to the ashram are welcome.

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit Vashishta Gufa are from October to April. During this time, the weather is pleasant and suitable for walking and meditation. It is best to avoid the monsoon season (July–September) due to heavy rains and slippery paths.
